Summer is coming to an end and most campsites are closing swimming pools and recreational facilities. However, the camping season is far from over. For me, this is the best season to camp. I love the calm of the slow season. With temperatures coming down, we take the opportunity to choose destinations offering different activities such as hiking, agrotourism, cultural visits and even the discovery of new villages.

Northern New York offers a wide range of activities and we particularly appreciate visiting this region in September or October. Here's some activities to put on your list if you plan to visit Plattsburgh or Lake Placid area.

Ausable Chasm (Plattsburgh area)

Ausable Chasm park is a must in the region and has been since 1870. It is known as the Adirondack Grand Canyon. Opt for the gentle and peaceful tube ride on the Ausable River. You will have the best view of its impressive gorges. The park's facilities offer easy trails and a new via ferrata for those looking for thrills.

Point au Roche State Park (Plattsburgh area)

Go for a walk on the trails of this state park. If the weather is mild, enjoy its beautiful beach.

Microbreweries and local distilleries (Plattsburgh area)

If you love craft beers, you will probably be interested in the many microbreweries in the region. To name a few, Plattsburgh Brewing Co, Oval Craft Brewing and Valcourt Brewing Company are all located near Plattsburgh city center.

The Mountain Spirit Distilling distillery, also located in the region, is an interesting stop for vodka and whisky lovers.

Lake Placid Village

The village of Lake Placid, host of the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Games, is an attraction in itself. A perfect holiday destination, you will find shops, art galleries, cafés and charming restaurants on the shores of the sublime Mirror Lake.

Climbing Little Whiteface and Whiteface peaks (Lake Placid Region)

The beauty of the Adirondacks unfolds before your eyes at the top of Little Whiteface and Whiteface Mountains. If you are not a fan of hiking but enjoy breathtaking views, know that you can access the summit of Little Whiteface by gondola. It is also possible to reach the summit of Mount Whiteface by car on the Veterans Memorial Highway from the city of Wilmington.

The Wild Center (40 minutes de Lake Placid)

Don't miss this park located in Tupper Lake, about 40 minutes from Lake Placid. This original complex is one of the most popular attractions in the region. In addition to the aerial walk (Wild Walk), the Wild Centre has a 54,000 square foot indoor interpretation centre. The highly interactive exhibition makes it the perfect family activity.
