I love variety! Spending holidays camping on the East Coast is literally life. I also like visiting big cities. Not easy to stop in New York after a nice week of camping if you are towing a 30 feet trailer! Over the years I took the challenge for several big cities. Here's a list of campgrounds located so close to urban areas that it will allow you to visit them for a few days without even taking your car or RV.

New York, NY

I would not describe this one as a campground, but rather a parking lot designed to accommodate RV travelers. A few years ago, after a great week on the beaches of Virginia, we stopped at Liberty Harbor RV Park in New Jersey. The kids were thrilled to visit New York for the first time.

This RV Park is just 15 minutes from the heart of Manhattan by car or public transportation. Grove St. PATH Metro station is only a few blocks from the campsite. Staying at the liberty Harbor RV Park is a very economical way to explore new York if the proximity to your neighbors doesn't bother you. Anyway, there's so much to see in New York that you'll probably spend very little time at the campsite.

Toronto, Ontario

Glen Rouge Campground is the only campsite located in the city of Toronto. On the outskirts of the Red River, it is the ideal place to dive into nature while staying in the city! It offers campers a unique experience: both the natural beauty of a park and the proximity of urban amenities and attractions.

Glenn Rouge Campground is located within walking distance of public transportation and within easy reach of local attractions such as Toronto Zoo, Petticoat Creek Conservation Area and Toronto Beaches. From the campsite you can explore Mast Trail.

Chicago, IL

The Illinois Beach State Park offers a nice proximity to Chicago allowing you to make a day trip from there. Zion Metra Station, right on its doorstep, allows you to easily get to the Chicago downtown area by train.

Spanning 6 1/2 miles along the sandy shore of Lake Michigan, this park is known for its unique flora, beaches, boating, hiking, picnics and especially biking!

Las Vegas

If you're in the Vegas area, why not camp directly on the famous strip? Beware, like the liberty Harbor in New York, this is not the most picturesque campsite! The Circus Circus RV Parkis actually a parking lot with all the amenities of a campsite. It may sound wacky but if you want to be in the heat of the Vegas action, I recommend it!

There's probably a tone of campsites like these that I do not know about. I'd love to find out! Do not hesitate to share the ones you've tried in the comments!

Happy camping!
